As Europe’s largest employer, with over 700 trusts and organisations to our name, the lives of millions are changed and transformed by the services we provide, every minute of every hour of every day. With an annual budget of £110 billion, we’re proud to have over 1.3 million people on board working to ensure that quality and value for money underpins everything we do in these challenging economic times.

The NHS is growing and changing faster now than at any time in our history. A big part of that development is in fact the development of our people. We want our workforce to reflect the diverse nation we serve and see people within the NHS realise their potential. The National Breaking Through Programme plays a vital role in that.

We’ve also formally launched the QIPP (Quality, Innovation and Productivity and Prevention) programme which looks at how quality could be dramatically improved in the NHS and the behavioural and mindset changes that would be required to encourage the spread and sustainability of good practice. Described as ‘the mother of all social movement exercises’, our innovative Five Frames approach was developed as the preferred approach to cultural change. You can read more about ‘Inspiring Change’ in the NHS and the Five Frames here

In addition, we’ve developed The Constitution, which works to establish the principles and values of the NHS. It’s about the NHS belonging to the people. It outlines our aims to deliver the highest levels of human knowledge and skill to save lives and improve health. And we intend to do this whilst showing real care and compassion for the people we help. The Constitution is something we want all our people to share and strive to deliver. You can find out more about it here.

Hello and welcome to the NHS. We’ve been looking after the health of English people for over 60 years, we will be doing just the same for many more to come. Here we will be telling you more about the size and scope of the organisation and just how much we continue to change and evolve.
